GIRLS SOCCER PREVIEW
Talk about life not being fair.
One year after all spring sports were cancelled, two Sheboygan North girls will also miss their senior soccer season because of knee injuries sustained in basketball – one week apart.
Emma Belmore, who started on the soccer squad her first two years and made all-Fox River Classic Conference as a forward in 2019, got hurt first in a Golden Raiders’ hoops game.
Macy Schetter, a center-midfielder who was also on varsity as a freshman and sophomore and was a starter in ’19, then got hurt.
“I really felt horrible for both those girls,” coach Tim Eirich said.
“They were so looking forward to both their junior and senior years because the team is strong so. They were both devastated, and I was devastated for them.”
TEAMS AT A GLANCE
Katie Veldkamp was hired as coach before last season and will rely on Christian senior Elliana Gonzalez, who earned honorable mention all-conference as a defender in 2019. Senior Maddie Zylstra ranked second on that team with 11 goals. … “We’re a team that plays to win and we’re a team that plays with grace,” Veldkamp said. “We show up to compete while encouraging each other and respecting the opposing team.”
Coach Tim Eirich says he is looking for a very successful year because his team returns seven starters from 2019 (when it won its second straight league title for the first time in school history). … Megan Little and Dana Fish made first-team all-Fox River Classic Conference two years ago, and Taylor Peper earned honorable mention. … “We have added some very talented sophomores and freshman to this year’s team,” Eirich said.
Junior Brooklynn Wiltzius recently committed to play at Northern Michigan. She spent her freshman year on varsity and played on a club team last spring. … Senior Halle Boldt’s 17 goals in 2019 was tops on the team, and junior Lily Luginbill ranked second with 14 points.
