The return of the sandhill cranes

THE RETURN OF THE SANDHILL CRANES is one of the signs of spring to enjoy each year. During mating season, sandhill cranes perform dancing displays, which include wing-flapping, bowing and jumping, or even throwing sticks or plants into the air, as this male did with a corn stalk recently in a Town of Rhine field. The pairs mate for life. — Beacon photo by Ian Johanson
