Casey Verhagen reached another milestone last month.
The Sheboygan Lutheran boys basketball player, who already holds the school record for most assists in a season, became the 11th Crusader to score 1,000 points in a victory over Mayville on Dec. 30.
“It was awesome,” the junior said. “It’s something I’ve always had a goal in mind for. It feels like I haven’t scored as many points as I have, but this year I’ve taken on more of a scoring role and it’s something I’ve worked very hard for.”
Verhagen, who will likely become the program’s all-time leader in assists, reached the scoring mark with about 12 minutes left in the second half.
Coach Nick Verhagen then called timeout to recognize the accomplishment in front of the home crowd.
“Most importantly we got the win, and he got his 1,000 point, so we check it off the list and we can focus on moving forward,” Nick said. “Now we’ll see if we can get to 1,500 or 2,000, but he’s got to stay healthy and we’ve got to keep winning basketball games.”
Afterward, Casey and some teammates went to Buffalo Wild Wings like they usually do.
“I didn’t get something to eat, I got something to drink and for some reason I got it for free,” he said. “Nothing was mentioned; it had to be a coincidence that I got it for free.”
