Aidan Diener sleeps on the floor and has been known to look through garbage.
No, the Lutheran senior is not homeless. He’s a fourth-year varsity soccer player who plans on studying at Concordia University Wisconsin and is the latest to answer “20 Questions.”
Q: How would you describe your bedroom?
A: A mess. I currently sleep in the basement in a sleeping bag with two blankets on the floor. I don’t sleep in a bed, and that’s my choice. I prefer sleeping on the floor. It’s unique. I have four other younger siblings and I would rather sleep in the basement by myself than share a room with my freshman brother.
Q: What is the funniest thing that’s happened at one of your jobs?
A: One of my co-workers has thrown a very important piece of paper in the garbage can and then it’s been taken to the dumpster, and I’ve had to go dumpster diving twice. I had to do that twice this summer. I work at Quit Qui Oc Golf Club and I had to go into the dumpsters, which was not very fun. But it was very unique. (He found the paper both times.)
Q: What’s a hidden talent you have?
A: I am a very experienced percussionist. I’ve been playing a drum set since third grade. It’s just been a way for me to express myself. I love playing the drums for my church and school groups. It’s something I love to do in my free time.
Q: What is the best restaurant in the area?
A: I really like Texas Roadhouse. Pizza Ranch. Those are probably my two go-tos.
Q: What’s the longest you’ve been without a cell phone and how did you survive?
A: Probably I think three days I went on a little trip. We were told to leave them at home. I don’t know if I’d be able to go much longer without it.
Q: What three things besides your phone would you want if stranded on an island?
A: A book of Sudoku puzzles, a pair of drumsticks and a container of string cheese.
Q: What is the most trouble you’ve gotten into?
A: I was home-schooled for middle school and my parents were very strict about me reading books versus time on our home iPad. I faked that I was reading and my parents found out I was just playing games the whole time. I got into a lot of trouble after that.
Q: If you could be anything or do anything for a living, what would it be?
A: Probably play the drums. The Newsboys is probably one of my favorite bands, and for King & Country. They both have great percussion sections and I would have so much fun playing drums for a living. It’s something I thoroughly enjoy.
Q: Your least-favorite school subject is?
A: Probably social studies. I’m not a very historical guy.
Q: If you were principal for a day, what would you do?
A: I would change the dress code for that one day and I would allow everyone to be on their phones during school.
Q: What scares you the most?
A: The fear of the unknown. I’ve had a lot of things I would like to happen and a lot of things I can plan on doing, but even over the last few years and with this whole COVID deal and whatever, it’s really just the fear of not knowing what’s next.
Q: What is your favorite movie?
A: I am a huge Avengers fan. My favorite Avengers movie is Ant-Man, but I really love watching any of the old Avengers movies.
Q: Is there one TV show you always have to watch?
A: I have two. I’ve really gotten into the series Monk recently. And also Seinfeld.
Q: Best band or musician of all-time?
A: For King & Country. They’re a good overall band and they play a lot of different types and styles of music. I like their unique style along with their ability to still share God’s word with everyone.
Q: What is the song you enjoy the most but are afraid to admit?
A: Probably High Hopes by Panic! At the Disco. A lot of people don’t think of me listening to normal cultural songs like pop or rock songs because I listen to a lot of Christian music.
Q: Favorite and least-favorite athlete?
A: My least favorite would be Tom Brady. I don’t like his guts at all. My favorite would have to be between Christian Yelich and Giannis. Even Aaron Rodgers could be thrown in too.
Q: What celebrity do you have a crush on?
A: If I had a crush on a celebrity I’d kill myself. I don’t really look at media stuff like celebrities. I would give you money if I could name you one celebrity.
Q: Biggest pet-peeve or superstition?
A: I’m fluent in Spanish and one of my biggest pet peeves is when people say things wrong in Spanish. … They’ll say a word wrong or forget the Hs are silent or something like that. It makes me mad sometimes.
Q: Name the video game no one can beat you at?
A: That’s another thing I don’t do. I don’t play video games. I have no games on my phone and we only have a Wii for my little siblings.
Q: What was the most embarrassing moment for you in any sport?
A: Probably air-balling half of my threes last year when I played varsity. I wasn’t a starter by any means and was probably the second-to-last or last person off the bench in blowouts. People would want me to hit shots and I was the guy who air-balled them all the time.
