Junior’s 36 points most scored in South girls game

Some two hours after kidding around about scoring the most points ever in a Sheboygan South girls basketball game, junior Halle Boldt did it.

The point guard finished with 36 points Tuesday to break the previous school record of 30 in a 69-47 win over visiting Manitowoc Lutheran that stopped the Redwings’ nine-game losing streak.

The girls knew what the record was because they have seen it on a new display that went up in the gym recently, and they just happened to be joking prior to the game how cool it would be to top it.

“Then right before the national anthem, one of my friends, Lindsey Horen, was like, ‘I think you should get 30 points,’” Boldt said. “I was like, ‘no, I think you should get 30 points.’

“And then I think that just arose in my head throughout the game and I saw that I had 18 points at halftime, and I knew it was doable.”

The third-year varsity player, who had never scored more than 19 in a game – it happened last year – noticed her point total on the scoreboard after she was fouled on a lay-up midway through the second half. She made the ensuing free throw to tie the record.

“It was time to smile,” Boldt said.

South coach Ellyn Hansen says she has been telling her team lately to be more aggressive and have an offensive mentality.

“Obviously, she took that to heart,” she said. “She does, in other games as well, penetrate and get to the basket very well up the middle of the lane. And (Tuesday) night, no one was able to step in and stop her. She kept taking advantage of it and finishing next to the basket.

“It was excellent to see.”

After the game, the public address announcer informed the crowd of the new mark and Boldt was given the game ball.

It is in her bedroom with the No. 36 on it, compliments of her mother.

“It was just kind of weird (joking before the game), and then the fact that it actually happened, was even weirder,” Boldt said.
