I must admit that when I enter a new restaurant with the word “ale” in the name my expectations for the quality of the food are not that high. What usually comes to mind are generic nachos, wings and mozzarella sticks. But the Fork & Dagger Ale Haus in Kiel turns out to be the best exception!

There’s attention to detail that’s usually lacking at similar establishments. And much to my delight, in addition to 40 local brews, the Fork & Dagger offers flights featuring four sample-size servings of beers on draft. It’s a marvelous chance to explore the hop-filled bounty from our local master brewers.

The appetizers caught our table off guard. The lox crostini with herbed gournay was fantastic. But it was the starter of the day, bacon wrapped seared scallops with balsamic fig glaze, that really gave the blow to our preconceived notions about the type of experience we were going to have that evening!

Although their burgers and sandwiches looked absolutely delicious, we opted for the entrees for our dinner that evening. The pork ribeye with white cheddar mash, three onion butter, and brussel sprouts was a the stand out at the table along with the wild mushroom shrimp pasta. Both dishes were beautifully composed and left a symphony of flavors with each bite.

We opted for adult only desserts after our dinner and were not disappointed with the after-dinner drinks menu! Although the Espresso shake made with Bailey’s espresso and ice cream was my personal favorite, the winner crowned by the table was the salted caramel shake made with Bailey’s salted caramel, ice cream, caramel sauce and topped with whipped cream and a cherry. True indulgence! I highly recommend you include one of these delightful drinks when you visit. You can’t go wrong.

Fork & Dagger Ale Haus is a reminder not to judge a book by its cover and is a pleasant demonstration of how clever chefs can elevate ale house cuisine!
