A goal by Gabe Elias and another shutout by Tony Schmitz has Sheboygan Christian/Lutheran back in the Division 4 state soccer tournament.

The reigning champion Eagles defeated Sturgeon Bay, 1-0, in a sectional final Saturday afternoon in Kiel.

“It’s a great feeling,” senior Caleb Hendrikse said. “We know what it feels like because of last year, so going back means a lot to us. The whole team is really excited about it.”

What wasn’t as exciting were the results of the seeding meeting Sunday morning, as Cristo Rey was voted No. 1 despite being ranked second in the state.

SCL, the top-ranked squad, was seeded second and has to play No. 7 Lake Country Lutheran in a semifinal game at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee.

Cristo Rey gets to face unranked La Crosse Aquinas earlier in the day.

The state final is at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

“I Think we should’ve been No. 1, but No. 2 just gives us motivation and gives us something to work for, something to prove to everybody,” Hendrikse said.

Christian/Lutheran is 20-1-1, owns a 10-game winning streak and is 17-0-1 since losing at Plymouth.

Division 4 was added to the tournament in 2013 and no team has won back-to-back championships.
