Sheboygan’s Under-17 Legion Team, which consists of several local baseball players, competed in the state tournament this past weekend.
The squad was at state for the first time since 2012 and opened with a first-round game against Oconto on Friday (after deadline).
“It was definitely a goal as a team,” coach Jason Stephen said. “About halfway through the season, once we started gelling and playing together as team, we realized we could win the regional and get to state. As a coach, I’m pretty proud of what the kids have accomplished so far.”
To get to state, Sheboygan rallied from a 5-2 deficit by scoring eight times in the top of the seventh to beat Manitowoc in Ashwaubenon on Sunday. The team lost to Manitowoc, 9-0, earlier in the day.
“All game long we were getting guys on base, we just could never get that third hit to keep going,” Stephen said. “Finally in the seventh, our bats kind of consistently came alive. Before the seventh started. I huddled up to talk about keeping the line moving. Batter 1 gets on for No. 2. No. 2 gets on for No. 3.
“It was a great effort from everybody all weekend.”
