State 23 expansion updates listed

The Wisconsin Dept. of Transportation has released details of scheduled work for two portions of the planned expansion for State 23, between Plymouth and Fond du Lac.

Location: A 5.34-mile stretch, from the State 151 interchange to Seven Hills Rd. in the Town of Empire. Work is expected from spring 2021 to fall 2022.

This work is part of the State 23 4-lane, on-alignment expansion project scheduled for 2019-2022 in Sheboygan and Fond du Lac counties.

This west section of the overall project includes the complete construction of additional lanes. Work involves grading, drainage culverts and inlets, aggregate base, concrete pavement, and other incidentals items of work. This project includes construction of a roundabout at State 23 and Wisconsin American Drive, a jug handle interchange with roundabouts at State 23 and County K, and a County K structure over State 23. At State 23 and County UU, a diamond interchange with roundabouts and a bridge over State 23 will be constructed.

Traffic impacts. State 23 will generally remain open to one lane in each direction.

County K closed after June 15.

County UU will be closed with access to businesses.

Wisconsin American Drive intersection at State 23 will be placed on a temporary roadway while the roundabout is constructed in stages.

Location: A 6.85-mile stretch, from near Seven Hills Rd. in town of Empire to the east county line at Division Rd. in town of Forest. Work is in progress, and expected to be complete by fall 2021.

This middle section of the overall project includes the complete construction of additional lanes. Work involves grading, drainage culverts and inlets, aggregate base, concrete pavement, State 23 westbound structure over the Sheboygan River, Old Plank Trail structure over the Sheboygan River, County G structure over State 23, diamond interchange at County G, wetland mitigation site, and other incidental items of work.

Traffic impacts: State 23 will generally remain open to one lane in each direction on either the existing lanes or added lanes. County G will be closed and detoured for much of construction. There may be short durations when State 23 traffic is reduced to a single lane with flagging operations.

Detours: The County G detour will follow County C, County P, County A, and County T.
