Santa, elves take to wheels bearing meals

Fresh Meals On Wheels Santas and elves will travel throughout the county Tuesday, Dec. 15 and Thursday, Dec. 17 spreading holiday cheer and delivering special gift bags to meal recipients at a distance. The Super-Duper Sidewalk Santa Event is the organization’s response to the cancellation of traditional holiday celebrations.

“So while we will not be collecting cookies from the community for those we serve, we will end the year with something joyful and uplifting. We took the things we couldn’t do safely and reimagined them into something festive and fun that would lift the spirits of those giving and receiving,” said Fresh Meals On Wheels of Sheboygan County, Inc. CEO Kelly Anderson.

The idea was to have people dressed as Santa leave small gift bags on meal recipients’ doorsteps and wave from the sidewalk to give each person a moment of joy at the end of a difficult year. Meals On Wheels is relying on individuals, businesses and other organizations to help provide items for the gift bags, donate cash or gift cards to purchase gift bag items, and to dress as Santa, Mrs. Clause or an elf to deliver the gift bags, are all greatly appreciated.

“Everyone needs a bright spot in their lives right now,” Anderson said. “This event is bringing as much joy to our staff and the people who are donating and helping out as we hope it will bring to those who receive the gift bags.”

Fresh Meals On Wheels will be accepting donations of gift bag items 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 30 through Friday, Dec. 4, or by appointment. A red inflatable tube man and a festive holiday arch will mark the donation site on the south side of the building at 1004 S. Taylor Drive in Sheboygan.
