Tourney to return to Wildwood Park

A state champion was supposed to be crowned today at Wildwood Park.

But the Coronavirus wiped out the legion baseball season and the tournament that was supposed to be hosted by Sheboygan Legion Post 83. However, it was recently announced Wildwood Park will host the 2022 tourney.

“The fact we’re hosting it, regardless of what year it is, is a pretty big honor,” coach Steve Goes said.

This year’s tournament was scheduled to start this past Friday, and the host site moves to Plover next season.

Goes is friends with the Plover coach and the two discussed the possibilities.

“Since he was pretty well set for next year, I said that’s fine, we’ll take it the following year,” Goes said.

Sheboygan has not hosted the state tournament since 2001.

“Obviously I was very disappointed when they cancelled the season,” Goes said. “I was more upset for our players because it was going to be a special year for them. We had a chance to be very good on the field and to be able to host the state tournament, get the automatic bid that comes with it – after winning it in 2018 – I was very disappointed for them they didn’t get an opportunity to play in it. But I knew it was still in play when the state president reached out to me and the Plover coach.”
