Bea and Tom Hollfelder announced July 10 a donation of $1 million on behalf of their daughter Carol Hollfelder to the Humane Society of SheboyganCounty.

The donation, as part of the organization’s Capital Campaign, Build New Beginnings, will be used to build the “Humane Society of Sheboygan County Carol Hollfelder Animal Shelter,” a state-of-the art facility that will serve the county’s animals and citizens.

Carol Hollfelder was an accomplished equestrian who was working with the Olympics in sight when she was involved in a motorcycle accident that left her a paraplegic at the age of 18.

After a lengthy recovery, Carol channeled her passion for competitive sports into professional racing, driving a 160-mph race car in the Speed World Challenge professional GT sports car series.

Driving innovation in racing by using hand controls in lieu of foot pedals to control the car, Carol quickly established a reputation as a remarkable driver.

“Carol always had a special relationship with animals,” said her mother Bea Hollfelder. “She was always welcoming stray cats into her home. But perhaps her most important relationship with animals was with her parakeet Justice. This bird didn’t have his full legs, and true to form, Carol took him in and nurtured him to full health. She had him until she passed away in 2018.”

To honor Carol’s deep love of animals, the Hollfelder family is contributing $1 million to name the Humane Society of Sheboygan County Carol Hollfelder Animal Shelter.

The 20,000 sq. ft., state-of-the-art facility will continue Carol’s legacy of caring for animals.

Over 2,500 homeless animals are served each year, along with providing vital services for Sheboygan County citizen’s pets.

“The City of Sheboygan and the Sheboygan County Humane Society share the goal to see Sheboygan be a more pet friendly community; this shelter development will provide a safe haven for homeless pets in our community until adoptive homes can be secured” added Mayor Mike Vandersteen, City of Sheboygan.

The Carol Hollfelder Shelter will be a place of health and happiness—a warm, welcoming, and bright community destination for the animals and thepeople who care for them.

Since 1964, the Humane Society of Sheboygan County, an independent nonprofit, has been dedicated to its mission: prevent cruelty to animals, relieve suffering among animals, and extend humane education. It is Sheboygan County’s only open admissions shelter and depends on public support for its programming. The Humane Society of Sheboygan County focuses on accessible spay and neuter programs.

  2. Miss you, Carol. We’ll ignore that Justice isn’t a parakeet; he lives with Avens now, and they get along very well!
