Food Bank launches drive thru

by The Sheboygan County Food Bank

Recently, the USDA began the Coronavirus Farm Assistance Program (CFAP) across the United States. Through this program, the USDA is buying and delivering fresh produce, dairy products, and meat products to send out boxes to places like Sheboygan County Food Bank (SCFB) that serve people in need of emergency food during the COVID-19 health crisis. These family-sized food boxes are called Farmers to Families Food Boxes.

In place of providing emergency food boxes entirely supplied by Sheboygan County Food Bank at 13 school meal sites throughout Sheboygan County, families who visit school meal sites are now directed to visit a new food pantry, Sheboygan Cares Drive-Thru Food Pantry, to pick up Farmers to Families Food Boxes and a Sheboygan County Food Bank-provided box (which contains a few non-perishable food and personal care items). Combined together, boxes supply food for a family of four for one week. In comparison to the separate organizations such as food pantries and shelters that we have been partnering with to serve our community for many years, this new food pantry is unique because it is coordinated by Sheboygan County Food Bank to directly serve Sheboygan County residents.

Sheboygan Cares Drive-Thru Food Pantry is located at Glacier Transit Storage (GTS), Building C, 4910 Frontage Road in Sheboygan. GTS has graciously allowed us to store pallets of boxes in their warehouse and hand out boxes in their parking lot. This new pantry serves families who were previously served at school meal sites and anyone else in need of emergency food (no registration required) and is open Mondays and Fridays, 10 AM – 12 PM. To receive the boxes, clients drive up to the southside of GTS’s warehouse at Building C where volunteers with masks and gloves safely place the boxes in the trunks of clients’ vehicles. The types of fresh products within the the Farmers to Families Food Boxes may vary each week.

For clients who are not able to make it to this new pantry, we recommend visiting our website at SheboyganCountyFoodBank.com to find a Sheboygan County Food Bank partner food pantry that works best.

At Sheboygan County Food Bank, we care about our community. We hope that the Farmers to Families Food Boxes and continued support of non-perishable food and personal care items will be helpful for the children, families, and seniors who we serve. Special thanks to the USDA, Hunger Task Force, Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin, Glacier Transit Storage, and LOVE Inc. for being key partners in bringing this new opportunity to life so that we can continue to distribute fresh, healthy emergency food for our community, especially during difficult times.
