Lutheran boys two wins away from state

A monster slam dunk by Jacob Ognacevic was just one of the highlights Saturday.

Not only did he finish with 34 points and 19 rebounds, Sheboygan Lutheran teammate Casey Verhagen scored a season-high 23 points to go with 14 assists in the top-seeded Crusaders’ 104-55 boys basketball victory over fifth-seeded Young Coggs Prep in a regional final.

Lutheran, 23-2, reached 100 points for the fifth time this season and was one point away from tying its season high.

The Crusaders, who had 59 points in the first half, also got 17 points from Delvin Barnstable, 12 from Graden Grabowski and 10 from Robby Michael.

Lutheran is ranked second in the state in the final Division 4 coaches’ poll and will face seventh-ranked and second-seeded Hustisford at 7 p.m. Thursday in a sectional semifinal at Fond du Lac High School.

Last year, the Crusaders lost in the same round to Oshkosh Lourdes.
