Athlete of the month: Brock Kovacic – South

BROCK KOVACIC

The senior set the 11-dive school record with 443.30 points at the Redwing Invitational and he also won two duals to go with a first-place showing at the Raider Relays.

Kovacic already broke the six-dive school record earlier this season.

“Brock’s been one of the best divers in our area for the past three years,” South coach Tyler Heilberger said. “January has been a great month and he’s been performing extremely well. His dives have been getting cleaner and smoother, and he’s looking like he’s going to have an end to a successful year with a state run.”

Kovacic did not dive his freshman season because he was on the YMCA gymnastics team.

He joined the team as a sophomore after his weight training coach talked him into it.

“He knew I’d be good at it right away,” Kovacic said.
Kovacic also played soccer his first three years at North and competes on the track and field team as well.

He pole vaulted at the Division 1 state meet the last two years, highlighted by a fourth-place showing as a junior after placing sixth as a sophomore).

Next year, Kovacic will continue to pole vault at the University of Wisconsin.
