“I didn’t want to die alone.”
That was 70-year-old South Carolina woman Shirley A. Mahaffey’s explanation to a Sheboygan County court about what motivated her to begin a years-long, long-distance relationship that resulted in $167,500 stolen from a Plymouth company, her boyfriend revealed to be a cruel fiction, herself in jail for over a year, and the primary suspect still at large.

Alleged swindle case takes a novel turn
Last June, The Review reported on a criminal case in which over $167,000 was reported stolen in June of 2022 from a Plymouth company. A jury trial for defendant Shirley Mahaffey, 70, of South Carolina is currently scheduled in less than a week. But a new charge filed Jan. 24 against a man from Texas revealed a whole new level to the case.
