North beat South in volleyball Thursday, but the Golden Raiders weren’t the only winners. It was Dig Pink Night at North, and close to $2,000 was raised for Bonnie and Mark Schultz.
“It was absolutely awesome,” Golden Raiders’ coach Chad Kuck said. “We had a packed house. We had the pink fire truck and we had a couple of firefighters at the game. It was a great atmosphere for a crosstown battle.”
Redwings’ first-year coach Abby Sigler agreed.
“Thursday night wasn’t the outcome that my team was expecting or hoping for, but we are still honored to have been a part of such an amazing event,” she said. “I personally know the Schultz Family and nobody deserves it more than they do. Even with everything they are dealing with, Bonnie and Mark always find time to come support volleyball. It’s truly amazing.
“The South program is very thankful we were able to be a part of the Dig Pink Night at North.”
North won, 25-15, 25-15, 23-25, 25-11, thanks to 29 kills, 18 assists and three aces from Lizzie Binder.
“She just dominated the match,” Kuck said. “She had 29 kills on 47 attempts, and she also sets for us. Her setting, blocking, hitting, she pretty much dominated the whole match.”
The Golden Raiders also got 26 assists and eight digs from Natalie Dulmes, 10 digs and three aces from Katie Goebel and 13 digs from Hope Sholten.
South was led by Hannah Miller’s nine digs, seven assists and five kills.
Corinne Pfeifer recorded eight kills, Maddie Ognacevic contributed four blocks and Elizabeth Calixto made seven digs.
Another highlight: When South defeated Ashwaubenon on Sept. 24, it was the Redwings second consecutive Fox River Classic Conference victory after going over three years without back-to-back league wins.
“She’s (Sigler) got them in the right direction,” Kuck said. “They’re competing, the girls are playing hard and she’s started (her first season) in the right direction.”
